Klad and Klad 2 - play in your browser
Klad ("Treasure") is a maze game written in 1989–1990 by Dmitry Ivanov and Andrey Shatalov (WoodMan) for the Korvet PK8020, a Soviet computer used in school classrooms. Play both parts in your browser: 25 and 40 original mazes, free, with no download or sign-up.
Once the game page has loaded, no internet connection is needed to play. All mazes, graphics and music are already in your browser.
Collect treasure, find the key and escape from the underground castle. Avoid the treasure keepers and water. In Part 1, the key unlocks the way out. In Part 2, you must also collect every piece of treasure before leaving each maze.
A game from Soviet school computers
The first part draws heavily on Klad for the BK-0010, another Soviet computer. That earlier game was based on ASCII’s Rise Out from Dungeons (MSX, 1983). Both Korvet PK8020 games have their own mazes, graphics and sound. This browser port recreates both games.
Pupils from School No. 18 in Grozny helped design and test the mazes.
From the original games
All 65 mazes, the graphics, pixel font and beeper music come from the original Korvet PK8020 programs. The game rules, keepers, items and sound effects were reconstructed from those programs. The English screens adapt the original text and small title captions; the Klad logo keeps its Cyrillic lettering.
Added for the browser
- Touch controls for phones and tablets, in portrait and landscape.
- Gamepad support and permanent WASD controls.
- Move and fire independently, including in opposite directions.
- Pause, including automatically when you switch tabs or apps.
- Saved progress and unfinished games: return to the start of your current maze after closing the page. You can choose any maze from the menu.
- A wider range of game speeds.
Progress, high scores and key bindings are saved in this browser and shared between the Russian and English pages. Only games started from maze 1 qualify for the high-score table.
Controls
Keyboard and gamepad
Arrow keys or WASD move. X and C, or comma and period, fire left and right. Z toggles sound. Space or Esc pauses the game; you can end a game from the pause menu. Use KEYBOARD in the game menu to reassign six keys. WASD and comma/period always work.
A gamepad works too: the D-pad or left stick moves, X or LB fires left, B or RB fires right, Start pauses and Back toggles sound. In menus, A selects and B goes back. Press a gamepad button once so the browser can detect it.
You can move and fire at the same time. Hold a fire button for repeated shots: a new shot appears after the previous one disappears.
| action | key | always |
|---|---|---|
| Left | Left | A |
| Right | Right | D |
| Up | Up | W |
| Down | Down | S |
| Fire left | X | , |
| Fire right | C | . |
| Sound | Z | sound on/off |
| Pause | Space | Esc |
In menus, Up and Down choose an item, Left and Right change maze or speed, and Enter or Space selects.
Phone and tablet
The pad on the left moves your character: press a direction or slide your finger without lifting it. The two red buttons fire left and right. The top-left button opens the pause menu during a game; the music note toggles sound. In menus, use the pad to choose an item and a fire button to select it.
Questions
How do the two parts differ?
Part 1 has 25 mazes; Part 2 has 40. In Part 1, find the key and reach the exit. In Part 2, collect all the treasure as well.
Can I play without an internet connection?
Yes, once your chosen game page has loaded. Open the game while connected, then you can disconnect and keep playing. Reopening the site or visiting another page without a connection depends on your browser cache.
Do I need an emulator?
Choose a part and play with JavaScript enabled. You do not need to install a Korvet PK8020 or BK-0010 emulator.
Can I switch languages?
Use the language link on the home page or below the game on a computer. Your saved data is shared. When you return to an unfinished game, it resumes from the beginning of the current maze.
